Vocabulary exercises. Food and meals

Exercise 1

Find the odd word in each line and explain why you think so:
1) aubergine, cucumber, poultry, spinach, beetroot
2) bacon, courgette, turkey, poultry, mince
3) garlic, carbohydrates, dairy, cereals, junk food
4) salmon, prawn, seafood, yolk



Exercise 2

You will hear 5 statements. Decide whether the statements True or False:
1) The term «dairy products» is used to describe food that is low in nutritional value, with a comparatively high caloric value. Many people try to avoid or limit such food in their diets.
2) Batter is a dish served before or at the beginning of a meal.
3) Broccoli is an edible (съедобный) green plant in the cabbage family, whose large flowering head is used as a vegetable.
4) Poultry is the name given to various kinds of baked products made from ingredients such as flour, sugar, milk, butter and eggs.
5) Carbohydrates are one of the main types of nutrients. They are the most important source of energy for your body.


Exercise 3

Make up sentences using the construction of Conditional Sentence Type 2. Say:
 1) what would you eat or wouldn’t eat if you were hungry
2)what would you drink or wouldn’t drink if you were thirsty

Form: if + Simple Past, Conditional I (= would + Infinitive)
Example: If I were hungry, I would eat buckwheat with turkey.

Exercise 5

Complete the following sentences using new words

Exercise 6

Here are things we use during the meal: a fork, a knife, a spoon, a plate, a cup, a glass, a teaspoon
Complete the sentences using these words:
1) We ear meat with … . 2) We eat fish with … . 3) We eat soup with … . 4) We put salad on … 5) We drink milk from … . 6) We pour wine into … . 7) Add two … of sugar in the coffee.


Exercise 8

You will hear a few sentences. You should understand what type of food is it and give examples. A mind-map may help you with this exercise.
1) Smth that helps you have a strong and healthy body by providing protein.
2) Smth that builds strong teeth and bones by providing calcium.
3) Its fast sources of energy.
4) Smth that helps you have gums, good eyesight etc. by providing Vitamins A and B.
5) Smth that gives you energy by providing protein, iron, and several B vitamins.



Exercise 9

How much do you know about the food you eat? Match the sentence halves:
